Gwendolyn Farms 100% Organic Hay

We grow hay the old-fashioned way, from start to finish, operating on our farm’s basic principle: all creatures deserve a life as good as Gwendolyn.

  • Harvested at the peak of freshness.  Plants continue to absorb nutrients from soil until just before bloom – best time to cut.
  • Sun-dried for natural quality.  Machine drying removes nutrients and freshness from the plant.  Ever tasted those wonderful sun-dried tomatoes which have rejuvenated the interest in tomato-based sauces?  Most people who have swear off of canned tomatoes forever.  It’s the same process, applied to your animal’s hay.
  • Raked and fluffed immediately after drying to minimize time between cutting and baling.  The less time between cutting and baling, the fresher the hay.  Because this process is labor intensive, it is costly – so most commercial farmers cannot afford it.
  • Organically grown – no artificial chemicals, fertilizers, or pesticides on our fields.  To be certified organic, a farm must be chemical-free for three years.  Gwendolyn Farms has been chemical free since we purchased it in 1996.
  • Stacked by hand for proper storage and aeration in our barn, the old-fashioned way.  Ever wondered why those old barns were built the way they were, with small spaces between the boards and the openings in the wood?  It was because the farmers understood the importance of properly stacking and hay and managing the airflow through the barn.  Improper techniques can result in a fermentation process as the hay continues to slowly lose moisture content trapped in the cell membranes.  This can result in moldy hay, and the rising temperature of the high-energy fermentation is the leading cause of barn fires.
  • At Gwendolyn Farms, only the best hay is harvested, baled, and properly stored.  This is a less efficient process, and therefore not attractive to the commercial farming operations.
  • You can see and smell the difference in quality as soon as you open a bale of Gwendolyn Farms 100% Organic Natural Grass Hay.
